Sadly in a hectic society, people's doing so fast that we could not help but judge people at a flash time. In this sense I agree that recently people put heavily weigh on personal appearance and fashion. This is because the first impression is more important than ever before and people have been exposed to media whenever, wherever.
To begin with, these days it seems clear that first impression is crucial to judge people. Even though, we cannot evaluate who you are perfectly, we can know almost the personality by looking at how they wear. For example, before job seeker get interview, they usually not only apply good cosmetics on their face but trim their hair carefully. This is because the interview time is so short that they have to impress the job interviewer only on their personal appearance.
What's more, mass media is contributed to this phenomenon. Advertisements play a significant role in projecting an image about luxurious and celebrities. As a result ordinary people imitate what famous people do and how they wear, so people unconsciously connect the public figure to them. Let me give you an idea, The Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea has shown that over 75% of Korean woman has undergone plastic surgery. One significant reason is to get a wider forehead and a rounder shaped-face like celebrities.
To conclude, I agree that people put too much emphasis on personal appearance and fashion. This is because people value first impression and mass media projects an image. Even so, we live in a fast-pace world I firmly believe this old saying "do not judge a book by its cover". It implies outward is nothing.
Fashion is becoming a genrally thing and every thing is include fashion in it self. fashion is what we and other have wear at this time. Fashion is not a stayable thing. It always change time to time.
